Darwin’s Mindil Beach is the home of the Lion’s Beer Can Regatta. The main event is a boat race where all the boats are made from empty beer or soft drink cans. The challenge is to sail around the course, find the object hidden under water and bring it back to the tent on the beach.
Easy! Well think again there are literally no rules. Boats need to be prepared to be bombed with flour, water cannons and the chance their boat may sink. There are no rules in the book to say the treasure cannot be stolen once found. So BEWARE OF PIRATES.
The Regatta has been run annually since 1974 and in 1978 The Combined Lions Clubs of Darwin accepted the challenge of running the event.
For a gold coin donation you can all participate in many activities such as tug of war and sand castle competitions, best novelty hat, beach running races, paddle board races, ironman and iron women races and my favourite the Thong Throwing Competition.
In 2014 Slappa’s Thongs became the major sponsor of both the Men’s and Women’s Thong Throwing Competition which even saw Bondi Vet and I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out Of Here! host Dr Chris Brown having a go at throwing Slappa’s Thongs.
This year’s event will be held on Sunday 12th July at Mindil Beach from 10am to 5pm. Mindil Beach Sunset Markets food and craft stalls will be trading all day. Entrance is by a gold coin donation.
Proceeds this year go to HPA Disability Services – Helping People Achieve.
Bar facilities are available, so no BYO alcohol is allowed.
