Post Exercise Recovery Tips

What you do before and after any form of exercise seriously impacts the speed and quality of your recovery. While training may seem like the most important aspect, aches or pains caused by incorrect recovery can be just as crippling as any injury caused during exercise. Here are some easy tips to ensure you recover correctly.

Foam rolling

Self-stretching or myofascial release, also known as “foam rolling”, is a form of self-massage used to release muscle tightness or target trigger points which can be performed using a foam roller. By applying pressure to specific points on your body you are able to aid in the recovery of muscles and assist in returning them to normal function.

Compression

Compression garments are designed to increase blood flow to areas of your body and can improve performance as well as shortening recovery time. Studies have shown that wearing compression garments post exercise reduces pooling in extremities and can increase the oxygen uptake in muscles and reduce blood lactate levels.

Correct Footwear

Following any form of exercise that places pressure on your feet, supportive footwear is crucial. The muscles, plantar fascia and ligaments that make up the arch of your foot work hard during running or any weight bearing exercise. During the hours after exercise these tissues may be fatigued and will benefit from extra support and cushioning. To avoid overloading of these structures, correct support can assist your feet to relax and recover. If you can’t wait to kick your runners off, consider an orthotic designed sandal or Thongs for comfort combined with therapeutic support.

What’s the best treatment for heel pain?

There are several treatment options for heel pain. Research shows that the best approach is to combine several therapies for best result. These include stretching, massage, ice therapy, strengthening exercises and custom orthotics.

Do orthotics work for foot pain?

Yes. Orthotics work by placing your foot in its most optimal functional position. This allows all the structures to function, as they should; avoiding muscle imbalance and reducing pain.

What conditions cause ball of foot pain?

There are many conditions that cause ball of foot pain including metatarsalgia, Morton’s neuroma, capsulitis, arthritis, clawed toes, bunions and plantar plate tears. Contact your local podiatrist for more information.

How can lower back pain cause foot problems?

There are several ways that lower back pain can impact the foot. Nerve root issues in the lower back such as bulging discs or compressed nerves can radiate along the sciatic nerve and into the foot. Differences in hip levels can contribute to foot pain through jarring in the joints or increased pressures when the foot lands.

What is the difference between a heel spur and plantar fasciitis?

Plantar fasciitis is damage to the thin band of tissue that connects the heel of the foot to the ball of the foot. It can develop as a result of repeat stress, injury or overuse of the foot.

A heel spur is a calcium deposit or growth on the heel bone that develops where the muscles in the foot connect to bone. These can often be asymptomatic but may become irritated due to extended periods of strain on the foot.

Why are my toes numb?

Numb toes can be related to metabolic, nerve and biomechanical issues. Peripheral neuropathy often caused by diabetes causes numbness beginning at the toes and moving up. Compressed nerves can cause numbness further down the limb into specific areas of the foot. Poor foot mechanics can lead to the collapse of the forefoot arch, putting pressure on nerves in the foot.

Why is big toe movement so important in total body function and prevention of pain?

The big toe joint allows for proper activation of the arch, as well as propulsion and shock absorption. If this joint is not working effectively it can lead to painful complications such as osteoarthritis and bunions.

Why Slappa’s Thongs work from a podiatry perspective for summer

Slappa’s thongs provide a great alternative to orthotics during the summer months. They provide arch support and will protect your feet during hot summer days.

Are all podiatrists the same? How do I find the right one for me?

No, podiatrists can specialize in different areas such as biomechanics, diabetes, rheumatology and pediatrics. Ring you local podiatry association to see who will be suitable for you.

One simple exercise to strengthen the arch

Toe raises strengthen the main muscle that hold up the arch- Tibilas Posterior. By completing three sets a day your foot strength will increase and reduce the need for orthoses.

Hope this information is helpful and remember it is in your best interest to investigate pain and dysfunction and come see experts like us at Sole Therapy.

If you are not in Sydney you can talk to your local podiatry state association and they will happily guide you to a local podiatrist that may help your pain.

Spring is here, and you all know what that means… it’s time to break out of your winter footwear. Yep, time to get your tootsies ready for summer!

All across Australia, the temperature is starting to rise and here is sunny Darwin that means the build-up has kicked off. Of course, summer isn’t quite here yet, which is a good thing because that gives you plenty of time to condition your feet ready to begin beach hopping, backyard barbequing and every other fun in the sun activity you can think of.

Your changing feet

But let’s get serious for a moment. Feet change a bit during the winter and they change again once summer arrives.

Coming out of the winter your feet are a lot more vulnerable. If you’re starting a new exercise routine or getting active be sure to go easy at first and then gradually increase… and don’t forget to stretch out and wear the appropriate footwear.

If you have a foot related condition already, such as plantar fasciitis, then be extra cautious to take good care of your feet.

Foot care is more than just being careful and wearing the right shoes, though that does go a long way.

To make sure your feet look extra good and feel great, this summer then check out this article which has some quick tips for summer foot care.

Remember, if you have any issues with your feet then it never hurts to go visit a podiatrist. In fact, several of our stockists are podiatrists…which just goes to show how good Slappa’s really are for your feet!

Top tip for starting summer

After those cold months all wrapped up in socks and heavy footwear feet tend to soften up, and because they’re softer at the beginning of summer that means your Slappa’s might not fit quite right.

Take a little time to remould into your Slappas. If you aren’t sure how to remould your Slappas don’t worry, just check out this video.

Remember your feet deserve the best support they can get, and moulding your Slappas gives them just that. Check out our new colour range,  and list of stockist to find one closest to you.

Thongs On,

This is the time of year the Northern Territory starts to bloom. The Wet Season has ended and the Dry is in full swing. Darwin is lush and full of life, kicking off with heaps of happening, fun stuff in July. Making it the perfect time, especially for those of you who don’t live in Darwin, to come on up and see the sights.

I’m giving you the heads up in June so you’ve still got time to slap on your Slappa’s and hoof our way 😊. Because if there’s one thing I know (other than fantastic thong-wear), it’s Darwin! So, for a Slappa’s Good Time, check this out …

We’re known in the Top End for being a pretty cruisy crowd. There’s nowhere I’m going to tell you about, that you can’t jump in and enjoy wearing your favourite thongs. Seriously, we invented the phrase laid back up here! So, when I say you can have a Slappa’s Good Time, I mean it, literally.

Magical Mindil Beach Sunset Market

This market is iconic and will be in full swing by July. It’s a favourite spot with Territorians and visitors alike. There really is something for everyone: fantastic food, tropical refreshments, world class stalls selling everything from art to thongs.

Guess who’ll be there with her Slappa’s Thongs? Be sure to pop by and say hi. I’d love to meet you! Plus, I’ll have some thrilling new thong colours arriving, as well as many of our classics.

What makes Mindil so magical is the location right on the beach. You can watch the sensational sunset, before browsing and basking in the cooler evening atmosphere on a Thursday and Sunday evening.

Top Tip

Get there early to bag a perfect sundowner spot for you and your esky; kick back and enjoy happy hour on the beach. It’s BYO only; no alcohol is sold at Mindil.

If you can’t make it down early, you can pre-book a VIP area. The Mindil team will set up a private area with tables, chairs and an esky with ice, that overlooks the beach and markets. VIP areas are $15 per head (or a little more per head if you want to arrange some added extras).

Slappa’s Go Bush

One thing my family loves, is the treasure trove of breathtaking natural beauty and our rich indigenous culture.

The Dry is the time to head out to some of these world-famous beauty spots, which are often impassable during the worst of our Wet Season. Stunning waterways, crystal-clear rock pools and spectacular waterfalls are all begging to be explored in places such as Kakadu, Litchfield and Katherine Gorge. There are many other equally gorgeous destinations you can visit from Darwin.

Slappa’s Sensational July recommendations

Territory Day on July 1st marks the Northern Territory’s anniversary of self-government.

The occasion is marked all across the Territory with fireworks displays, concerts and celebratory events.

If you happen to visit Mindil Beach Markets on Territory Day, you’ll enjoy a fantastic fireworks display, lighting up the Timor Sea. Truly magical!

The Beer Can Regatta has been hosted by The Lions Club since 1974. You don’t want to miss this hilarious, unique, utterly Territorian experience!

Let me tell you, there is nothing quite like watching as these beer-can-crafts (soda cans for the minors) are tested on the water. It’s a day for everyone and always draws a big crowd to Mindil Beach. Check out the video clips on their site – they put the F in Fun!

There’s more than just testing these preciously crafted vessels involved; you can always get involved in portage races, kayak races, sandcastle comps, iron man events and take part in some of the silly competitions – like thong-throwing! A special activity sponsored by Slappa’s Thongs. 😉

Come join us Sunday 9th July 2017

10am to 5pm Mindil Beach, Darwin.

Most Mindil Beach Sunset Market stalls will be set for the whole day.

Get your formal thongs on for Darwin Cup Carnival

Whilst we love our (sometimes) capsizing beer-can-vessels, beach and bush activities, we’ve got our classy side.

This is Darwin – of course, we have formal thong-wear!

If you want to get really dressed up and feel quite posh then why not spend a day at the horse races? There’s heaps happening and a great opportunity for posh-frocking. Ladies Day is an awesome day to dress up in your killer heels and dress-to-die-for. And when those heels start killing your still fun-fueled feet, swap them out for a pair of colour coordinated Slappa’s Thongs.

What’s more fun than spending the day with your besties, enjoying a flutter, admiring the fashions, dancing and drinking bubbles (a little too much for some)?

Part of the carnival celebrations is The Darwin Cup Ball, the biggest outdoor ball in the southern hemisphere, an opportune event for rubbing shoulders with celebs. And the very last event of the carnival is, of course, The Darwin Cup which is always held on the 1st Monday of August, so if you’re in Darwin then make sure you don’t miss it!

Slappa’s Lounging About

Now Darwin can involve a lot of stimulating activity, but if you prefer to just kick back and relax…

Then have I got the perfect Darwin activity for you!

The Deckchair Cinema is open 7-days a week, with the box office open from 6pm. It’s the perfect opportunity to just chillax, sit beneath the stars and soak up some cinematic sensation.

This is all just the tip of the iceberg, of ways to enjoy tropical Darwin and our stunning surrounds in the Dry.

Did I mention the other good thing is you can be comfortable and wear thongs (preferably Slappa’s) at all these events? (Yeah, I know I did 😉).

And there’s more. A lot more! Don’t take my word for it. Check it out for yourself at the Tourism Top End Site.

Thongs On!

Denise

Please don’t strike me down with a lightning bolt for misquoting the bible!  I’m not getting a God complex.  Promise!

I’m just a humble thong creator.  All things thongs are my passion though.  You know this because you kindly follow my blog, and/or the Slappa’s Thongs newsletters and many of you are with us on Facebook.  Thanks for being there, reading, commenting and sharing ❤

So, yes, we all know Denise is thong-mad, but maybe you don’t know why …

Many people think I got this way because Slappa’s Thongs is my business.  And that after years and years of thong immersion, I’ve become an incurably thong-manic.  I’m not denying that’s the case, though the truth, about my condition, is embedded in my sole (yes that’s spell-checked correctly).

And it’s why I started Slappa’s …

Years ago, I was selling a brand of thongs which looked good – and for those with no feet foibles – felt good enough, so long as you didn’t expect Birkenstock comfort.

By feet foibles, I mean everything from soles that needed arch support, to feet with serious issues like Plantar Fasciitis, heel pain, or just tired feet.

People started asking me for a thong that could really deliver.  Something that anyone could wear, each, and every day, with the comfort of a Birkenstock (except if you wear your Birkies in the water the cork gets waterlogged!), the support of a podiatry product and of course, it had to look great too.

Hmmm, I thought, the thongs I’m selling don’t do any of that, they’re just thongs.  And I couldn’t find any other thongs that met that wish list.

Plus, I had a motivation of my own to find a solution to what thong lovers were asking for.  I needed arch support too, but couldn’t find an affordable product that looked and felt good.  After having my children and not having good footwear, I also started suffering from sciatica.

There’s nothing that puts you in your customers’ shoes faster than sharing your customers’ pain!

So, I started designing and producing the thong of all thongs.  It’s still an Australian owned family business.  I don’t just stand by my product, I literally stand on my product! Every day.  The arch support in Slappa’s has been so good that I only really notice my sciatica when I am not wearing Slappa’s.  They keep me aligned.

Why do you need to know about Other Thongs?

What I really want you to know, is that some Other Thongs can easily be mistaken for Slappa’s Thongs.  They may look just as pretty.  Exact same colours sometimes.  But the good looks are only skin deep.

If you want an affordable, good looking pair of thongs that will last and love your feet to their soles (and back), make sure to check that they’re Slappa’s Thongs. Does it really matter? Hell yes! And here’s why it matters for you …

The material Other Thongs are made from can be too soft, so they flatten and lose their support and are more prone to shrinking.  If you’ve ever worn Other Thongs to walk across stones and felt them (the stones not the thongs!), you’ll know what I mean.  This can also lead to spreading the foot.  I’m not a fan of any part of my body spreading.

If thong material is too soft they won’t support the arch enough, allowing your foot to roll in.  Which is bad for your feet, posture and over-all body alignment and will need correcting.  Wearing a pair of Slappa’s will help 😉.

In my profession as a physiotherapist I am concerned about the “foundation” of my patients. In other words their feet, the arches and the surface on which they stand and walk. Slappas thongs are ideal in the tropics where many people walk bare footed on tiles in the heat. Collapsed arches are very common under these environmental conditions and many patients complain of foot pain from the hard tiles. Slappas thongs are soft yet supportive of both the medial and transverse foot arches. The outer raised edge of the Slappas thongs keeps the foot exactly where the arch support is required. I love the fact that they are made of recycled material. Slappas thongs are approximately a third of the price of other orthopedic sandals and they are perfect for the very wet weather we have in the top end of Australia. I recommend Slappas thongs to many of my patients and I wear them myself.

Alice Thorn Acupuncture & Physiotherapy

After having your Other Thongs a while, have you ever found your feet flapping around in them? Not a good look unless you’re a penguin in Happy Feet.  That’s because the toe piece is not as strong as Slappa’s material, so it can easily stretch – and break!

Other Thong straps can be made too loose to start with, giving your feet another lack of support issue.  Like falling flat on your face maybe … ☹.

A firmer material to start with, like Slappa’s, is better for the feet, posture and your whole body alignment. Plus, your Slappa’s Thongs will last longer. Better value for money. Better quality.

I first came across your product in Darwin at the Mindil Markets. I can’t remember the actual price at the time, but I do remember thinking it was unrealistic – way too expensive! You could go to K Mart and get a set of thongs for $5.00, what were Slappa’s thinking?

As my darling and I wander around the markets, I started to reconsider. The product must be better than the original Japanese Safety Boot. It has arch support, the straps can’t pull out, it is just a matter of how well they last?

I bought a pair; I have not been more impressed with a single product for a long time. It has the extra support and it works, they are much more comfortable than a simple safety boot. The colour combination was/is good. They have lasted – (better than I would ever have believed) – I live in Alice Springs and 2 years later they are thin as, but still working. For anything to survive 2 years in Alice Springs is a statement in itself. I wear them everywhere and I mean everywhere! For anyone who is into Japanese safety boots (and even if you are not) Slappa’s are hard to beat!

Wonderful product.  –Rick | Customer (NT)

Some Other Thongs have the soles glued onto the thong, so if you get them wet the glue perishes and they fall apart. I’m shocked at some leading brand name thongs and ortho products that do this. Especially the price they charge for them. You’d have to have rocks (ooh, does that rhyme with something …?!) in your head to part with that much money for that kind of ‘quality’.

January – the peak of our Aussie summer and so, peak thong fashion time. It’s hot, hot, hot and there’s no better way to keep those twinkle toes feeling cool and better still – looking cool!

Take a peak at some of these pretty as a picture fashioned-up feet rockin’ their Slappa’s …people are so clever! Pretty polish, anklets, a bit of bling or a ribbon and viola!

How you decorate your Slappa’s is limited only by your imagination and creative talent. Popular in the fashion stakes are the brown and white Slappa’s being colours that women say they wear with dresses and skirts as they are more dressy.

Tassie Report

Well the Slappa’s crew had a great Christmas and New Year – hope our seasonal wishes for you came true and that you had a wonderful time.

Tassie was great for our family and I loved the R & R time. Both our kids were competing in the Under 13’s Cycling and unlike many other sports, boys and girls compete together.

This was Kaylee’s first year in the Under 13’s.  She was one of the youngest in her age group and the only girl. It was pretty hard going but she placed 3rd in 2 events and will be one to look out for next year. Bernie placed 2nd or 3rd in most of his races, just pipped at the post a couple of times for 1st place.

There is money to be won in the races and all money won by the kids goes into a kitty shared by all the team.

There were 8 in our team from Darwin and on their day off the winnings paid a trip to Tazmazia and bought us all lunch at Banjo’s Bakery.

The team was very successful and after our fun day out they still have enough money to buy 2 aero helmets for all the kids to use when competing in sprint competions. They are also going to put some money towards buying sporting goods to give to the kids in Timor.

Back on Deck

We all came back ready to hit the ground running and we’ve had to burn rubber to keep up with the deluge of orders from our customers and wholesalers.

If you’re anywhere near Slappa’s HQ you might see some multi-coloured Ethylene Vinyl Acetate (EVA) foam on the bitumen – that’s how fast we’re moving – leaving Slappa’s tracks! (Not rubber – we don’t make the comfiest thongs out of that stuff!)

So, what’s next?

Yeah, Australia Day! Yay!!

If you haven’t got yourself thonged up ready for the legendary Aussie Day barbie, you know who to call!

Lime Green and yellow Slappa’s are currenty on sale for the bargain price of $30 per pair.

Have a great one!

Warmest wishes,

Denise

Besides the Sahara Desert, you’ve taken your thongs to Mystery Island, cruising on Legend of The Seas, from Vietnam to Koh Samui – you sure get around in them! Thanks for sharing and posting on Facebook with us; great stories like these from….

Sue Gates Hubby & I took our Slappers on Country Cruisin on Legend of the Seas last week….this pic was taken on beautiful Mystery Island.

Rachel Higgs From Vietnam yesterday to Koh Samui today…Most comfortable footwear I’ve travelled with. Just glad I bought 2 pairs. With Plantar Fasciitis and now odeama, they truly are my life saver.

Fibromyalgia & Fasciopathy Friendly

Rachel’s post meant a lot to me too, because apart being fashionable, fun and comfy, I designed Slappa’s Thongs with built-in Arch Support, great for Plantar Fasciitis (or fasciopathy), heel pain and generally relaxing tired feet. So, posts from Slappa’s Facebook friends who have found some relief from Fibromyalgia & Fasciopathy wearing their Slappa’s Thongs, is the best ever news to me.

Janice Jack I bought some in Alice Springs and after wearing them for a couple of days I went back for another pair. I have trouble with planter facsiitis and they are the best things I have come across. I wore them for 3 months while travelling and had no trouble at all.

Tina Robinson I have fibromyalgia and suffer with a lot of pain in my feet. Wearing slapper thongs eliminates most of my pain. Wish they came in ‘winter’ styles to for cold Melbourne winters. Mine have lasted 2 years now, getting thin from wear (almost every day) so need to restock.

Who’s spending November in a pair of Slappa’s Thongs?

If you’re a lover of foot fashion, then this is the time to thong-up for summer!

A great spin-off to wearing Slappa’s Thongs is that not only do your feet look pretty, but they’re also happy feet :).

Many of our customers tell us how much they love Slappa’s Thongs for their good looks and their great arch support. A big bonus if you need that extra support and comfort.

Why shouldn’t you have stylish, fashionable, footwear in fun colours, just because you need support? At Slappa’s we don’t buy in to the idea that special needs feet have to be encased in clunky, ugly orthotic shoes and sandals.

When I designed the first Slappa’s Thongs, it wasn’t with the intention to set up a range of orthotic thongs. I certainly don’t market my thongs that way, although some orthotic retailers do stock Slappa’s Thongs. I just wanted to create a thong which looked great and felt great.

I think most of our customers are initially attracted to the Slappa’s Thongs range because they look fantastic, with loads of zany, fun colour choices. Plus, you can see right away that they are high-quality, robust thongs – a big differential from most other fashion thongs.

What makes them so super comfy?

Here’s the techy bit …

Slappa’s Thongs are super comfy because they are made from Ethylene Vinyl Acetate (EVA) foam. Made in a closed-cell injection mold means Slappa’s Thongs are all one piece, unlike most rubber thongs which have a plug – have you ever been booby-trapped by a thong plug coming out?

Not a good look. Or feeling!

Slappa’s are designed to stay on and mold to your feet, obtain your personal foot shape, have great arch support, are extremely light, very durable, relax tired feet and are orthotic-friendly footwear.

That’s why when you slipped on your first pair of good-lookin’ Slappa’s, your feet sighed with happiness.

That’s why Slappa’s lovers post comments like this “just glad I bought 2 pairs. With Plantar Fisciitis and now odeama, they truly are my life saver,” on our  Facebook page – thanks Rachel Higgs for sharing your Slappa’s experience with us.

You don’t have to be a fashion victim just because your feet need some extra TLC.

Give your feet a treat this summer!

Warmest wishes,

Denise

Before any great trip there is the inevitable question of what to pack.

For me, one of the biggest packing decisions is “What shoes should I pack?” Not only do shoes take up so much room, you never end up wearing most of them. And, bugger it, you are on holidays! So why not wear your thongs?

In actuality, having your thongs be your travel shoes makes sense and is the practical thing to do.

Your feet also deserve a holiday

Let’s face it. When on holidays, you are going to want to give your feet time out too. No business shows or heels – something lazy and comfy.

But for many of us, holidays include a fair bit of exploring, which also means a lot of walking. So it’s important to make sure your travel shoes will provide the correct support as well as be very comfortable. There is nothing worst than suffering with sore, swollen feet or getting nasty blisters. This can totally ruin a perfect holiday!

The perfect travel shoes

The perfect travel shoes need to be supportive, comfortable, lightweight and the kind of shoes you are actually going to want to wear on your holiday.

In other words, thongs!

But be careful! Wearing flat thongs or poorly made flip-flops could actually be harming your feet. They are likely to leave you feeling exhausted after a day of walking and can also increase the risk of potential foot problems like plantar fasciitis or heel spurs.

So what is the recipe for the perfect travel shoes?

Need the perfect travel shoe? Our customers think slappa’s are the answer for traveling around the world! Get yourself a pair of slappa’s for your next travel adventure. You can order online now!
